W&W recap: 1x24, Is There a Doctor in the House?
Gabrielle: I wanted to thank you for saving my life- again. You always seem to be doing that.
Xena: It was your decision to come back.
Gabrielle: Well, how could I leave you? We have so many wars to stop and despots to foil. You’re gonna need my help.
Xena: I couldn’t do it without you.
W&W commentary: besides being one of the most important episodes in season 1, “is there a doctor in the house?” also brought about this crucial discussion— if you could spend the rest of your life with Gabrielle or Xena, who would you pick? it’s a tough one. we would also like to point out that in this episode Xena invented the tracheotomy, CPR and the C-section. and she inspired the Hippocratic oath. you’re welcome, modern medicine.
Rebekah commentary: so obviously the climax of the episode, the scene where Gabrielle “dies” and Xena just loses it—it’s a defining moment in the show, in Xena’s and Gabrielle’s relationship. Cait and I discuss this more in our of end-of-season 1 video commentary (STAY TUNED) but Xena is so absolutely out of control at the thought of losing Gabrielle, in contrast to her composure through the ENTIRE season. have we ever even seen her cry before? it’s almost like the whole season was leading up to this moment—methodically establishing Xena as a self-contained character who is in absolute control of her world. and then, here, this all shatters—and who caused that shattering? an irritating little blonde girl. that, to me, has always been my favorite aspect of the show. it really does show the power of a type of female character who is traditionally dismissed. if I may get political for a moment, I am sort of sick of the word “queer” and how tumblr especially has made it this word without any real meaning except “oh a little bit different”—but THIS show is what queering looks like to me—a fundamental re-examining of and placing value on something that sexism or homophobia ignores or just doesn’t see. Gabrielle is this girly, supportive, somewhat naive and trusting, physically weak, emotional girl— I feel like this kind of character would otherwise get very little attention, or only be used as a foil or love interest for the male character, because we are told that only masculine (or masculine-ish) characters really matter in stories. anyway. ahem. this clearly isn’t a touchy subject for me at all. on a lighter note, in terms of Gabrielle’s character—I love that Xena tells Gabrielle “you never ran from anything in your life.” this shows such a profound understanding of Gabrielle’s bravery and her constant movement forward, her willingness to risk, always.
Cait commentary: Yes, Xena has cried before…over MARCUS, ugh. But we have blocked that from our memory. So, there is a lot that can be said about this episode; there is so much emotion, and so much is revealed about the depth of feeling that Xena has for Gabrielle. In fact, I’m hard pressed to think of another scene where Xena loses it to this extent. We also have the return of Ephiny, which I love because Ephiny is awesome. The first time I watched this episode I was too distracted by the Xena/Gabrielle dynamic to really pay that much attention to her and the baby story-line, but I think that there is a real parable to race relations in the centaur-amazon conflict. And Ephiny and Phantes’ story is powerful commentary about interracial relationships, tolerance and overcoming discrimination. It was an important thing that the writers did here, and I think it adds to the weighty and serious quality this episode has. But on a lighter note, and Rebekah can attest to the amount of time I spend talking about this, let me discuss an aspect of Gabrielle that I am completely fascinated with. And actually I don’t think I have mentioned this in w&w yet! So, I feel that Gabrielle has this extremely magnetic quality to her. We have seen throughout the first season, though it is never explicitly stated, that people just seem to trust her. But in this episode it starts to become more than just magnetism. People are PROTECTIVE of Gabrielle. Protective when they do not even know her. It is striking this effect that she has on people the minute she meets them. Marmax, the army general, tells Xena that she never should have brought Gabrielle into a war zone. And he is accusatory! As if he has this right (or need/desire?) to protect her. And then at the end, one of the doctors is wounded and he is all like “let me die and save Gabrielle.” What!? Goodness, I just think it is so interesting! People (i.e. strangers) would die for her! It happens more and more as the series progresses and I’m sure I will talk about it again, but this is really the first time you see it. What is it about her? I know that w&w has somewhat mixed feelings about how Gabrielle is portrayed as so “good,” but perhaps it applies here. Is it the inherent goodness in her that inspires such devotion? Her ability to understand and make people feel at ease? I just don’t know.
